The Chukchansi people are one of the original inhabitants of what now is called California. The Chukchansi have inhabited the fringes of the San Joaquin Valley and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada for more than 12,000 years. During the years after the Gold Rush (1849) anthropologists visited the land of the Chukchansi. They grouped California Tribes together by their languages; hence, the Chukchansi are grouped with approximately 60 other Tribes in the greater Central Valley. These groups had (and still do have) similar cultures, and speak the same language, but had different dialects. The tribe became federally recognized in 1983.

Language Department
The Language Department of The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians was established in 2022. In 2010, the tribe partnered with Fresno State University professors to create our Chukchansi Dictionary, a grammar for tribal members, a Chukchansi curriculum for teachers, and 27 myths translated into Chukchansi. Our department has begun offering online language lessons for tribal members; our first class was offered July 3, 2023. If you are interested in participating please let us know via email or phone, or visit the events page to learn more.
